EPC guide Wallonia

PEB: meaning, labels and certificate register

Direct answer

PEB stands for « Performance Énergétique des Bâtiments » — Energy Performance of Buildings (EPB). In Wallonia, the EPB certificate shows a home's theoretical primary energy use (kWh/m².year) and gives it a label from A++ (very efficient) to G (very inefficient). Each certificate is issued by an approved assessor, carries a unique number and is recorded in the Walloon administration's database — commonly called the « EPB register ».

What PEB covers

PEB refers both to the Walloon energy performance regulations and to the documents they require: the EPB certificate (sale or rental of an existing home) and EPB declarations (new builds and renovations, prepared by an EPB Officer).

The EPB certificate register

After the visit, the assessor enters the data in the official software and the certificate is recorded with the Walloon administration. The unique number printed on the certificate lets the notary or buyer check its authenticity.

If you lost your certificate, contact the assessor who issued it: they can provide a copy while it is still valid.

Reading an EPB certificate

The certificate shows:

  • the energy label (A++ to G);
  • specific consumption in kWh/m².year;
  • estimated CO₂ emissions;
  • quantified improvement recommendations.

Real example

An uninsulated 1960s terraced house in Namur gets an F label (about 420 kWh/m².year). After roof insulation and a new boiler, a new certificate rates it C.
